About The Agnese Haury Institute for Interpretation

The Agnese Haury Institute for Interpretation is the longest running intensive Spanish/English interpreter training program in the United States. The Institute, now in its 27th year, is an intensive three-week course dedicated to improving language and interpreting services in diverse areas.

Flexible Curriculum

In order to meet the changing needs of the Latino community (and the interpreter community) the Agnese Haury Institute (AHI) has developed a more flexible curriculum where our goal is to enable interpreters working in different fields to tailor some aspects of the Institute to best suit their own needs.

For instance, the 2010 AHI will provide students with the option of attending specific classes from the Medical Interpreter Training Institute, July 12 - 18, without reducing its renowned instruction in judicial/legal interpreting. Additionally, students will have new opportunities to broaden and hone their skills in educational/community interpreting without sacrificing the Institute’s unique instruction.

The AHI Method

The AHI is committed to providing students individual attention. Improving a skill requires practice. Much of the Institute is spent in the language laboratory and small group workshops, working closely with fellow students and experts in the field on simultaneous and consecutive interpretation and sight translation techniques and strategies.

Lab work is mixed with lecture, maximizing the impact of both while helping keep students fresh. Lecture topics run the gamut of areas important to working interpreters, from law, ethics, and protocol to specialized vocabulary, retention, note-taking skills, and self-instruction techniques, to forensics and regional distinctions in Spanish, among many others.
