About The Medical Interpretapes
Interpretapes© Medical Edition Volume 1 is the first of a series of simulated language lab exercises designed to help the medical interpreter build his/her skills at home.
Based on techniques and insights from the Agnese Haury Institute—the longest-running Spanish/English professional interpreter training program in the country—Interpretapes© Medical Edition draws on the experience of working interpreters and uses authentic, real-world scenarios to provide self-study materials that will have the broadest possible application and the maximal effect for the student.
Volume 1 presents five doctor-patient interviews for practice in consecutive interpretation. Each interview focuses on different health issues prevalent in the United States:
| Asthma | Diabetes Mellitus | Heart Attack Predisposition |
| Colon Cancer and Colonoscopy | Blood Pressure and Stroke |
In Addition, each interview is rendered by a Federally Certified Court Interpreter (with an accompanying transcript) to enable self-critique and analysis.
Volume 1 also presents a brief medical overview for each of the five conditions, in both English and Spanish, providing the interpreter with:
- Greater grasp of specialized terminology in use than can be gained from a glossary.
- Beginning conceptual background to help make better sense of the conditions as discussed between doctor and patient.
In addition, each of the five medical overviews is recorded to allow for simultaneous interpretation practice.
